Portugal – Forest fire
• A forest fire broke out in the municipality of Gouveia in the district of Guarda, central-northern Portugal, on 10 August. The fire is located near the civil parish of Aldeias e Mangualde da Serra. As of early 12 August, it was still active and nearly 400 firefighting personnel was involved in the extinguishing effort.
• According to EFFIS, the fire burnt an area of approx. 1,243 ha (as of 11 August).
Mali – Severe weather
• Heavy rain reportedly affected north-eastern Mali on 8 August, triggering flooding in the town of Menaka, southern Gao Region.
• As of 9 August, media reported five people dead and 400 houses damaged in the town. The town’s water wells have also been affected, contaminating the water.
• Over the next 24 h heavy rainfall is forecast for southwestern Mali. Moderate rainfall may also affect some areas of western Gao region.
Argentina – Severe weather
• Heavy rain has affected several areas of Argentina over the last few days, causing floods in particular in the provinces of Buenos Aires and Santa Fe.
• As of 12 August, media report three people killed and over 10,000 people evacuated. Over the next 48 h more heavy rain and wind may affect the two provinces.
Nepal – Severe weather
• Heavy rain has affected Nepal over the last two weeks, causing floods and landslides in central and western areas. Approx. 94 mm of rain in 24 h were observed in Dhangadi (western Nepal) over 10-11 August.
• As of 11 August, media report 10 people killed due to landslides in 3 districts and damage to transportation infrastructure in Sindhupalchok district.
Ukraine – Conflict
• Despite the Minsk ceasefire agreement of 12 Febuary 2015, fighting and shelling continues. In particular, the situation in Donbas has aggravated sharply in the early hours of 10 August when shelling between Ukrainian forces and separatists occurred in Novolaspa-Starohnativka in Donetsk region.
• To date, following 18 months of conflict, internal displacement continues to increase in Ukraine with 1,381,953 people having fled to the eastern part of the country while more than 922,651 Ukrainians have sought asylum or other forms of legal stay in neighbouring countries.
Myanmar/Burma – Severe weather
• Official figures are still increasing. As of 11 August, over 1.1 million people have been critically affected, at least 103 people have died, over 240,000 households have been displaced and 15,197 houses have been destroyed.
• Over the next 48 h heavy rain may affect Kachin state, the coastal areas and eastern Myanmar/Burma.
Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – Severe weather
• Heavy rain affected the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) from 1 to 5 August, causing floods in the provinces of South Hwanghae (south-western DPRK), South and North Hamgyong (eastern and north-eastern DPRK).
• As of 10 August, there were 21 people dead, nine missing, 3 400 affected, almost 700 destroyed houses and more than 4,000 ha of crops as well as public infrastructure damaged.
